The Front Porch – A Day Of Music On Ferndale Porches is a one-day music event created to showcase musicians from around Michigan playing on the front porches of Ferndale. The event features both established and up-and-coming acts from all genres.
The successful inaugural event took place on June 24, 2017 and brought more than 40 musical acts to 25 porches. An estimated all-ages crowd of 5,000-plus walked, biked and even strollered to and from the family-friendly sites. Government officials, law enforcement officers and residents were clamoring for organizers Michael Benghiat and Gary Graff to bring the the event back in 2018 even before the last notes faded.
2018 promises to be even bigger for The Front Porch. The event will expand to nearly 30 porches, with more acts playing during the six-hour schedule.
The Front Porch is also on its way to becoming a TV series. Detroit Public Television has green-lighted a program based on a pilot shot during the 2017 event. The show will be hosted by award-winning music journalist Gary Graff and consist of performance and interview segments with Michigan bands filmed on iconic front porches. Front Porch Productions, LLC has partnered with Detroit-based production house The Work and plans a Fall 2018 launch. The goal is to help expand the reach of the featured musicians around the state, and possibly beyond, as well as highlight the importance of arts and music in both community and commerce. There is no other program like this currently on the air.
